Whittier Activities Access

Updated: Dec 6, 2018

Professor Schweitzer asked us to assess the accessibility of activities for high school students in cities throughout the LA region. Extracurricular activities keep students engaged after school, provide creative learning opportunities and skills building, and can give students an advantage in the college application process. My teammates, Dylan Coyle and Jared Bendifallah, and I were assigned to study Whittier. All distances are measured on Google Maps from Whittier City Hall.

As seen in the first graph of activities near or located in Whittier, the high school is home to many extracurricular activities that are accessible to high school students. For activities located both in and out of Whittier, access to a car substantially reduces students' travel times to and from activities.

These graphs provide insight into the intersection between transportation accessibility and socio-economic class differences. Access to a car is a significant aspect of transportation equity, particularly for youth.
